Rising Stars: Meet Adam Miguel Estevez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Miguel Estevez.
Hi Adam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?I grew up playing soccer on the fields of Puryear Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. My childhood dream to become a professional soccer player started to become a reality when I was selected to the US National Soccer Team in 1989. That same year, I retired.
Instead of soccer, I found myself with a diagnosis of bone cancer and a battle for my life. After a tortuous year of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I survived (thank God). My life took on different directions and perspectives in the years following. I began to rekindle an earlier interest in the arts. While studying psychology at Harvard, I began to paint in my free time.
My development became more serious after studying art in Florence, Italy. I began showing my work in galleries in New York while pursuing a psychiatry residency (with forensic psychiatry fellowship) in New York. I may have been the only student in scrubs at the Art Students League of New York!
I returned to home St. Petersburg to pursue my two careers: art and medicine. As a psychoanalyst and contemporary visual artist, I continue to find my work very rewarding, endlessly complex, and fascinatingly interwoven.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?Having two careers and a family with two small children is a challenge! There is never enough time, money, or energy in the day for all. I have to divide my time carefully in ways that allow for nourishing those most important to me without neglecting my own interests and needs. It is a balancing act that requires continual refinement (and a patient, loving wife)!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?I am a contemporary visual artist working primarily on large-scale aluminum sheets and water-based paints. I use various painting techniques foregoing the traditional paintbrush, often with a squeegee or scraper. Often, I incorporate oxidation methods with zinc, copper, and iron including rust as part of a composite whole.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?I have worked with various galleries and private patrons in St. Petersburg, Florida. In particular, my collaboration with Studio@620, artist Kenny Jensen and artist Alyssa Marie has been very rewarding. I invite anyone who is interested to contact me.
